Oxidative stress that leads to mitochondrial dysfunction represents an imbalance between excessive production of free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize reactive compounds. Oxygen atoms usually come in pairs, but when an oxygen atom is single, it is extremely unstable and causes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including highly reactive peroxides and superoxides, which damage cellular lipids and proteins causing disruption of cellular homeostasis. Disrupted homeostasis leads to inflammation and consequent DNA damage. This process is also thought to contribute to accelerated aging. Additionally, oxidative stress is considered both the cause and consequence of many life-threatening conditions and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Research shows that people who consume a diet with the highest content of carotenoids have the lowest incidence of morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases because carotenoids are effective "hunters" of free radicals and thereby reduce oxidative stress that causes cellular damage. Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid whose chemical structure resembles beta-carotene, but it is considered a more powerful antioxidant than beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and other members of their family.
Certain studies have shown that oral intake of as little as 2 mg per day, for 4 weeks, results in a significant reduction of endogenous oxidative damage to DNA, by about 40%.
Astaxanthin is the strongest natural antioxidant from the group of carotenoids; 10 times stronger than beta-carotene and 500 times stronger than vitamin E. Although they have similar chemical structures, astaxanthin, unlike beta-carotene, has a keto and a hydroxyl group at each end of the molecule that contribute to its antioxidant power. Also, astaxanthin is fat-soluble and can pass the brain-retinal barrier and provide a protective effect there while beta-carotene and lycopene cannot.

The main structural component of the gray matter of the brain are fatty acids, which are extremely sensitive to damage caused by the action of free radicals (lipid peroxidation process).Astaxanthin has the ability to absorb UVB rays, which has been observed in algae Haematococcus pluvialis which naturally protects itself from intense UV radiation by producing large amounts of astaxanthin, which serves as a protective factor. In addition to exceptional antioxidant capabilities, astaxanthin also has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
